A routine response to a road accident in Techiman has led to a major drug seizure, with the Ghana Police Service confiscating 397 slabs of suspected cannabis.
The discovery was made on March 8, 2026, after a tricycle rider crashed into a stationary truck near the Methodist Park area. Police responding to the accident around 2:00 PM found the rider, 48-year-old Robert Tannor, with severe leg injuries.
However, what initially appeared to be a simple traffic incident took a significant turn when officers searched the unregistered Motor King tricycle, commonly known as an “aboboyaa.” Hidden inside 14 bags of charcoal the rider was transporting, police discovered compressed slabs of dried plant material suspected to be narcotic cannabis.
A subsequent count revealed a total of 397 slabs of the substance concealed within the charcoal bags.
The injured suspect was immediately rushed to the Holy Family Hospital in Techiman, where he is currently receiving treatment and remains under strict police guard.
Meanwhile, the driver of the Kia Rhino truck involved in the collision fled the scene immediately after the accident. The police have issued an appeal to the public for any information that could help locate the driver to assist in their ongoing investigations.
In a statement released by the Bono East Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Appiah Danquah, the police reassured the public that a thorough investigation is underway. “We are committed to getting to the bottom of this case, and anyone found to be involved will face the full rigours of the law,” the statement read.
The seizure is a significant blow to illegal drug trafficking in the region and underscores the vigilance of the Ghana Police Service in combating the distribution of narcotics.
