Sports Minister pledges support for Ghana Olympic Committee(GOC)

Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Hon. Kofi Adams, has expressed full confidence in the leadership of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) and pledged the ministry’s commitment to working closely with the body to advance sports development across the country.

The minister made these remarks during a working visit to the GOC headquarters at the Olympic House in Accra on Wednesday, where he engaged with committee officials on strategies to enhance Ghana’s sporting fortunes.

Adams commended the GOC for its role in preparing Ghanaian athletes for international competitions and reaffirmed the ministry’s readiness to provide the necessary resources to support these efforts. He specifically highlighted ongoing athlete support programmes, including the Olympic Scholarship scheme, which has benefited several Ghanaian sportsmen and women.

A key outcome of the meeting was the minister’s commitment to address the long-standing OlympAfrica Project at Amasaman. The recreational and training facility, which has faced encroachment challenges, is set to receive renewed attention through collaborative efforts between the ministry and the GOC.

“We are aware of your long-standing recreational and training centre project at Amasaman, which is being encroached by squatters,” Adams stated. “I am happy to say that the Ministry of Sports and Recreation will work with the GOC on the OlympAfrica Project to ensure it is completed for use.”

GOC President Richard Akpokavie Esq., accompanied by board members, briefed the minister on the committee’s programmes, achievements, and development initiatives. The discussions covered preparations for upcoming international assignments, including the Commonwealth Games and the Youth Olympic Games.

Akpokavie expressed appreciation for the minister’s continued support and assured him of the GOC’s dedication to fostering a productive partnership with the ministry.

The meeting also addressed broader challenges affecting Ghanaian sports, including funding constraints and infrastructure deficits, with the minister assuring the GOC of the ministry’s efforts to tackle these issues.

The visit concluded with both parties pledging to strengthen collaboration to drive Ghana’s sporting ambitions and ensure the nation’s athletes receive the support needed to excel on the international scale.
