Ministry of Sports and GBC forge partnership to transform football broadcasting

The Ministry of Sports and Recreation and the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) are set to revolutionise sports broadcasting in the country following a high-level meeting aimed at strengthening their collaborative efforts ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The discussions, led by Sports Minister Kofi Adams and GBC management, focused on securing comprehensive broadcast rights that will ensure every match of the global tournament reaches Ghanaian audiences nationwide.

School Sports at the Heart of Development Agenda

Minister Adams used the occasion to push for an expanded partnership that extends far beyond World Cup coverage, with particular emphasis on transforming school sports broadcasting as a catalyst for grassroots development.

“I’m particularly interested in school sports because that’s where we can enhance all the talent and guide them to commercialising their talent and professionalising it in different ways,” Adams stated.

He called for urgent action on a memorandum of understanding that would establish a structured framework for school sports coverage, describing educational institutions as vital talent incubators for the nation’s football future.

“Let this not be just one of sight and visits, let’s immediately put it into action by working out the MOU, how it will be structured, especially our school sports,” the Minister stressed.

Rekindling Passion for Local Football

The Minister expressed concern over what he described as Ghanaian fans’ disproportionate focus on European football at the expense of supporting domestic clubs, including traditional powerhouses Medeama, Hearts of Oak, and Asante Kotoko.

“We can bring back this culture,” Adams asserted. “Once there is love for football and they learn what is far away, prepare what is closer nicely, and they will go for it.”

He positioned GBC’s broadcasting capabilities as instrumental in reigniting enthusiasm for the local game, envisioning a sustained “farm culture” that would nurture grassroots talent and guide promising players toward professional careers within the domestic system.

Mutual Benefits and Long-term Vision

Adams framed the proposed partnership as a mutually advantageous arrangement that would deliver lasting infrastructure gains for Ghanaian sports.

“It’s a golden opportunity to work together. We all are going to be beneficiaries of it,” he declared.

The collaboration, which builds on preliminary discussions about establishing a School Sports Authority, represents a dual-track approach to sports development—leveraging the global appeal of the World Cup while strengthening the foundations of Ghanaian football through enhanced school sports coverage and increased visibility for local clubs.
