‘They predicted I’d be jailed, but I remain free after a year’- Agyemang-Manu fires back

Former Health Minister Kwaku Agyemang-Manu has broken his silence over predictions that he would face arrest and prosecution by the John Dramani Mahama administration over alleged corruption during his tenure.

In a viral video captured at a recent campaign event, the former minister who served for over seven years under former President Nana Akufo-Addo’s government, dismissed what he described as negative prophecies about his political fate.

According to Mr. Agyemang-Manu, political opponents had predicted he would either suffer serious illness, die, or be imprisoned by the incoming administration. Nearly one year into the new government, however, he maintains that none of these predictions have materialised.

“Some people said I would be jailed, others predicted I would fall seriously ill or even die. After almost a year, I remain free and strong,” he stated.

The former minister acknowledged that public office comes with unavoidable criticism, noting that even well-intentioned actions can offend some quarters. He, however, stressed the importance of acknowledging mistakes and offering apologies when errors occur.

Mr. Agyemang-Manu has previously been named among officials who could face prosecution over the controversial Sputnik V vaccine procurement contract during the COVID-19 pandemic. Reports indicate he admitted to bypassing Cabinet approval by engaging a private intermediary in the deal to secure vaccines for Ghana’s pandemic response.

His comments come amid ongoing discussions about accountability regarding COVID-19 expenditure and procurement processes under the previous administration.
