Black Stars captain Jordan Ayew has thrown his full weight behind the current squad ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, asserting that the players who secured the nation’s ticket to the global showpiece are more than capable of delivering on the world stage.
Speaking exclusively to Adom Sports, the Ghana skipper expressed unwavering confidence in the team’s core, suggesting that the unity and quality displayed during the qualifiers should be rewarded with continuity.
“I think the players who played during the qualifiers have done extremely well. I don’t think we need any additions,” Ayew stated firmly. “I believe we have a good team and, as time goes on, we are improving. We haven’t had much time to train together, but the unity is getting better and everything is improving.”
Ghana secured their place at the expanded 48-team tournament, co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, following a dominant campaign. The Black Stars finished qualifying strongly, remaining unbeaten in their final six matches with five victories and a draw to top their group.
Ayew, who will lead the team in what is considered a challenging Group L, acknowledged that the final decision on personnel rests with the technical handlers. However, he cautioned against making sweeping changes to a squad that has already proven its mettle.
“I don’t think this is the right time to make changes. But to be honest, on the technical side, the coach will know whom to add or select,” the striker explained. “Whoever is added must be ready to give their all and put on a show.”
The Black Stars are currently fine-tuning their preparations for the tournament. They will kick off their World Cup campaign against Panama in Toronto, before facing European powerhouses England and Croatia in what is anticipated to be one of the most closely contested groups in the tournament.
With the captain’s vote of confidence in the current crop of players, the spotlight now turns to the final squad selection as Ghana aims to make a deep run in the 2026 World Cup.
