Grief has enveloped the University of Cape Coast (UCC) following the tragic death of a second-year student who succumbed to injuries sustained in a road accident on Thursday afternoon, just as he was heading to write a scheduled examination.
Kweku Mensah, a Level 200 student pursuing a Bachelor of Commerce in Finance, was involved in a collision with an Ayalolo bus at approximately 3:00 pm on March 5. The incident occurred along the campus stretch between the Amissah-Arthur Language Centre and the Sandwich Lecture Theatre.
According to preliminary investigations, Mensah was rushing to Oguaa Hall to retrieve his identification card, a requirement for entry into his examination hall. He was navigating the campus thoroughfare on a motorcycle when the crash occurred.
Emergency responders and bystanders rushed the critically injured student to the University of Cape Coast Hospital. However, medical personnel were unable to save him, and he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The university administration confirmed the fatality in an official statement released on Friday, March 6. The institution has since notified the bereaved family and is providing them with support as they navigate this devastating loss.
“The University extends its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased and urges the University community to remain calm as investigations continue,” said Dr. Kwabena Antwi-Konadu, Acting Director of the Directorate of Public Affairs.
The campus police unit, in collaboration with the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), has launched a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision. Officials have confirmed that the student’s body has been deposited at the UCC Morgue, where it will remain pending post-mortem examinations.
The incident has reignited conversations about road safety on campus, particularly regarding the interaction between private motorcycles, public transport, and pedestrian traffic during peak academic periods. Authorities have assured the public that further updates will be provided as investigative findings become available.
