The Ministry of Health has officially opened the application window for six post-basic specialised nursing programmes, as part of the government’s broader strategy to enhance healthcare delivery through the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (MahamaCares) and the Ghana Labour Exchange Programme.
In a statement issued on March 4, 2026, and signed by Chief Director Desmond Boateng on behalf of the Minister of Health, the Ministry announced that applications are being accepted from March 3 to March 26, 2026.
Addressing Critical Healthcare Needs
The new programmes are a direct response to the increasing burden of non-communicable diseases in the country, such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and kidney failure. The Ministry also cited the need to mitigate the impact of health worker migration, which has created gaps in specialised care.
The six areas of specialisation now open for admission are:
· Critical Care Nursing
· Emergency Nursing
· Cardiology Nursing
· Nephrology Nursing
· Endocrinology Nursing
· Oncology Nursing
Training Institutions and Academic Progression
Training will be conducted at five health training institutions across three cities. These include the Peri-Operative and Critical Care School at Korle Bu, the Nursing and Midwifery Training College campuses in Korle Bu, Kumasi, and Tamale, as well as the Ear, Nose, and Throat School in Kumasi.
The programme is structured to run for four semesters. Upon successful completion, candidates will be awarded a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree by the University of Cape Coast. Graduates will also be eligible for associate membership of the Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives and will receive licensure from the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana.
