Ghana’s National Chief Imam, Sheik Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, has condemned the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, describing his death as a profound loss for the entire Islamic world.
In a statement issued Tuesday, the Chief Imam conveyed his sympathies to the Government and people of the Islamic Republic of Iran following what reports indicate was a targeted killing. He characterized the incident as a deeply painful moment that extends far beyond Iran’s borders.
The spiritual leader described the late Ayatollah Khamenei as a devoted servant to his people, noting that his leadership exemplified the harmony between faith and governance in promoting social stability and national development.
“The Supreme Leader was also a symbol of resistance and hope for the oppressed,” the statement read. “His Eminence further extols the martyred leader of Iran.”
Sheik Sharubutu strongly criticized what he termed “US–Israeli aggression,” which he said led to the Supreme Leader’s martyrdom during the sacred month of Ramadan. However, he also expressed grief over all lives lost in the ongoing conflict, regardless of nationality or faith—whether Jewish, American, Arab, or Persian.
The Chief Imam urged restraint among all parties and called for the protection of national sovereignty, human dignity, and the sanctity of Ramadan.
“His Eminence calls for an end to all hostilities. Indeed, escalating rhetoric must give way to peace-building pragmatism,” the statement added.
While acknowledging that the tensions are largely geopolitical in nature, the Chief Imam emphasized that interfaith cooperation remains essential in the pursuit of lasting peace. He further advocated for a reimagined global order founded on the principle of “right over might,” arguing that such an approach would strengthen international security and harmony.
The statement concluded with prayers for Allah’s mercy upon Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and all those who have lost their lives in what it described as “the pursuit of righteousness.”
The assassination comes amid heightened tensions between Iran and US-led forces, with regional and international observers closely monitoring potential repercussions across the Middle East and beyond.
