Asiedu Nketiah Declares He’s Unbeatable, Fires Warning at NDC Rivals Ahead of 2028 Race

Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has issued a stark warning to anyone considering challenging him for the party’s presidential ticket, asserting that any such attempt would be a futile waste of time and resources.

Speaking at a campaign event in Nima on Monday in the lead-up to the Ayawaso East parliamentary by-election, the veteran politician projected an air of invincibility regarding his standing within the party.

“Everyone knows that anyone who dares to contest Asiedu Nketiah may be under a curse from his family,” he told the gathering, suggesting that potential rivals would face certain defeat.

The comments have added fuel to long-standing speculation that the NDC Chairman is preparing to enter the race for the party’s flagbearer slot for the 2028 general elections. While he has not made a formal declaration, the warning to his colleagues signals a serious intent to be a contender when the party opens nominations in 2027.

The rumours surrounding his ambitions have been actively amplified by his own family. His eldest son, Dr. Kwaku Asiedu-Nketiah Jr., recently fueled the speculation by sharing a video of his father boasting about his popularity on social media, captioning it “Shots fired.”

More explicitly, his second son, Charles Akwasi Asiedu, who serves as the Member of Parliament for Tano South, took to Facebook to declare that Ghana “needs Asiedu in 2028.” The MP made the statement while celebrating the party’s victory in the recent Akwatia by-election, an election in which the NDC chairman played a highly visible and crucial role.

Asiedu Nketiah’s potential entry sets the stage for a competitive internal contest. With President John Mahama constitutionally ineligible to seek a further term after serving his current mandate, the race to lead the party is wide open.

Several prominent figures are already being tipped as potential successors. Among the names circulating are Vice-President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, and Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu.

Others reportedly being considered include Agriculture Minister Eric Opoku, former GCB Bank Board Chairman Professor Joshua Alabi, and Dr. Zanetor Agyemang Rawlings, the daughter of Ghana’s late founder, Jerry John Rawlings.
