The Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, has made a firm commitment to channel significant resources into the development of amateur boxing in Ghana.
Mr. Ampofo Ankrah, speaking on Saturday, February 28, 2026, outlined his vision to rejuvenate a sport that has historically been a source of national pride but has faced challenges in recent years. His pledge signals a strategic shift in focus for the NSA, aimed at unearthing and nurturing young talent from the grassroots level.
“I see a great deal of potential in our amateur ranks, and it is time we backed that potential with the necessary infrastructure, funding, and administrative support,” the Director General was quoted as saying. “This is not just about participation; it is about returning Ghana to its rightful place as a powerhouse in international boxing.”
The announcement has been welcomed by boxing enthusiasts and former pugilists, who have long called for greater investment in the amateur game to build a sustainable pipeline of talent for the professional ranks and international competitions like the African Games and the Olympics.
The NSA’s renewed focus on boxing is expected to involve collaborations with the Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF) and various gyms across the country to identify and develop future champions.
