President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the government will commit GH¢15 billion to complete 23 major road projects abandoned by the previous administration. The announcement was made during the President’s 2026 State of the Nation Address (SONA), where he outlined the administration’s strategy to revive critical national infrastructure.
The stalled contracts, which span approximately 573 kilometres across all 16 regions, were reportedly halted due to a lack of funding. President Mahama emphasized that completing these projects is a top priority under the government’s flagship “Big Push” programme, which aims to enhance connectivity and stimulate economic growth.
“These are not just roads; they are economic corridors that will link farmers to markets, reduce travel times, and create jobs for the youth,” President Mahama stated.
Beyond finishing the backlog, the President noted that work is already underway on 50 new major road projects covering 1,144 kilometres, with a total estimated value of GH¢50 billion. These initiatives are expected to significantly reduce transportation costs and open up rural and urban areas for development.
To ensure the smooth execution of these projects, the government also plans to settle outstanding debts owed to contractors from previous contracts. According to the administration, clearing these arrears is crucial to restoring confidence in the public procurement system and preventing future project delays.
The President assured Ghanaians that significant progress on these roads will be visible by the end of the year, reinforcing the administration’s commitment to delivering reliable infrastructure for all citizens.
