US and Israel launch major military campaign against Iran, Trump vows to raze missile industry

The United States and Israel launched coordinated military strikes against Iran on Saturday, in a dramatic escalation that President Donald Trump described as a “massive and ongoing” campaign to neutralize the Iranian regime’s military capabilities.

The operation, which targeted ballistic missile facilities and launchers, marks a significant shift from weeks of diplomatic negotiations and plunges the region into a state of high alert. In a video message posted to social media, Trump confirmed the operation, stating the goal is to “prevent this very wicked, radical dictatorship from threatening America and our core national security interests.”

“We are going to destroy their missiles and raze their missile industry to the ground,” Trump said.

In response, Iran has vowed a “crushing response,” according to state media, and has closed its airspace. Schools across the country have been ordered shut, transitioning to remote learning.

Widespread Strikes and Retaliation

The attack, which a US official described as “not a small strike,” is expected to continue for several days, two sources told CNN. Geolocated videos verified by CNN show smoke rising over the capital, Tehran, with strikes also reported in the major cities of Isfahan, Qom, Karaj, and Kermanshah, according to the state-run Fars news agency. The extent of casualties remains unclear.

Approximately two hours after the initial bombardment, the trajectory of the conflict shifted as Israel’s Home Front Command warned citizens of incoming missiles launched from Iran. The Israeli military confirmed its air force was actively intercepting threats, signaling the beginning of a retaliatory phase. In response to the anticipated escalation, Israel declared a state of emergency, closed its airspace, and ordered a halt to all non-essential activity.

From Diplomacy to Conflict

The military action follows months of heightened rhetoric and failed diplomatic efforts. In his address, Trump claimed Iran was attempting to rebuild its nuclear program following a US strike on its facilities in June. Iran has consistently maintained its nuclear ambitions are for civilian purposes only.

“The US and its allies can no longer stand by while the world’s leading state sponsor of terror inches closer to a nuclear threshold that will threaten global security,” a senior administration official said, speaking on the condition of anonymity.

The operation comes just two days after US and Iranian officials concluded talks in Geneva aimed at reviving a nuclear deal, underscoring the fragility of the diplomatic track. Trump has repeatedly insisted Iran halt all uranium enrichment—a demand Tehran has rejected—while also signaling a desire for broader regime change.

Military Preparations and Risks

The strikes represent the culmination of weeks of military buildup. The Pentagon has been steadily massing Air Force and Naval assets in the region, preparing for a potential “go” order from the White House. However, internal concerns about the scale of the conflict have been brewing. Military officials, including Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Dan Caine, have privately warned of the potential for significant US casualties and the complexities of a prolonged engagement with Iran, according to CNN.

As the US fortified its position, satellite imagery revealed that Iran was simultaneously reinforcing several of its nuclear facilities, bracing for the possibility of an attack.
