In a strategic move to combat the rising tide of substance abuse among Ghanaian youth, the Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment, Hon. George Opare Addo, has officially announced the appointment of renowned Ghanaian hip-hop artist Samuel Adu Frimpong, known professionally as Medikal, as the ambassador for the flagship ‘Red Means Stop’ campaign.
The announcement was made before Parliament, where Hon. Opare Addo emphasized the critical need for influential voices to lead the charge against drug abuse, specifically highlighting the dangers of the synthetic drug commonly referred to as “red,” which has been posing a severe threat to the health and well-being of the nation’s youth.
According to the Minister, Medikal’s significant influence and reach within the youth demographic will be instrumental in driving the campaign’s message home.
“The National Youth Development and Empowerment Ministry is thrilled to announce the partnership with Ghanaian musician Medikal as an official ambassador for the ‘Red Means Stop’ campaign,” Hon. Opare Addo stated. “Involving a renowned artist of his caliber is a deliberate and strategic approach. We aim to leverage his extensive influence among the Ghanaian youth—through his music and social media presence—to champion a substance-free living agenda and steer our young population away from the dangers of drug abuse.”
The Minister outlined a dynamic role for the new ambassador, which extends beyond a ceremonial title. Medikal will be actively involved in grassroots engagement, including participating in school outreach programmes and live performances designed to educate and entertain simultaneously. A key component of the strategy will also see the integration of the ‘Red Means Stop’ theme into his music videos and public appearances to ensure the campaign’s message permeates popular culture.
The appointment comes at a crucial time as Ghana grapples with escalating drug use, particularly among its youth demographic. The ‘Red Means Stop’ campaign represents a concerted effort by the Ministry to curb this trend, involving a coalition of government bodies, traditional rulers, and prominent citizens who have all raised alarms over the growing social problem.
With Medikal on board, the Ministry aims to transform the campaign into a youth-centric movement, fostering a culture of awareness and prevention to secure a healthier future for the nation’s leaders of tomorrow.
