Two men in custody after police reject GH¢100,000 bribe in major drug bust

The Ghana Police Service has arrested two suspects and seized a large consignment of narcotics following a routine stop-and-search operation in the Central Region. The officers involved demonstrated remarkable integrity by reportedly rejecting a substantial bribe offered to secure the suspects’ release.

The incident unfolded during a patrol along the Agona Asafo–Kwesitwukwaa road. Police officers stopped a commercial taxi with registration number GR 2932-26 for a routine check. The vehicle’s occupants were identified as Godfred Acquah, 28, and Awudu Usman, 34.

Upon searching the vehicle, officers discovered four sacks containing 154 compressed slabs of dried leaves, suspected to be narcotics. The two men were immediately taken into custody.

Acting on intelligence gathered during the initial arrest, police proceeded to conduct a search at Usman’s residence in Asisim, a suburb of Agona Swedru. The operation at the house led to the discovery of an additional 55 slabs of the same suspected narcotic substance, bringing the total seizure to 209 slabs.

In an apparent attempt to avoid prosecution, the suspects allegedly offered the arresting officers a bribe of GH¢100,000 in exchange for their freedom. The officers, upholding the highest standards of professional conduct, firmly rejected the offer and proceeded with the legal process.

The suspects remain in police custody and are pending arraignment. They are expected to face multiple charges, including possession of narcotics, illegal drug trafficking, and bribery of a public official.

Police management has commended the officers for their exemplary display of integrity and professionalism. Their actions have been hailed as a strong testament to the service’s unwavering commitment to fighting crime, corruption, and drug trafficking in the country.

Investigations are ongoing as authorities work to dismantle the wider network and identify any other accomplices linked to the illegal drug operation.
