Ghana bolsters northern border security, deploys defence attache’s after deadly attack on traders

In a decisive response to the recent deadly attack on Ghanaian traders in Burkina Faso, the Ghanaian government has activated two forward operating bases along its northern border and approved the deployment of defence attachés to six countries identified as high-risk.

The new security measures were outlined on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, by the Deputy Minister for Defence, Mr. Ernest Brogya Genfi, during a briefing before Parliament’s Joint Committee on Defence, Interior, Foreign Affairs, and National Security.

The announcement follows the tragic incident in Burkina Faso that claimed the lives of eight Ghanaian tomato traders and left three others injured, heightening concerns about the safety of citizens engaged in cross-border commerce in the volatile Sahel region.

Forward Operating Bases Activated

Mr. Genfi confirmed that two forward operating bases located at Jirapa and Hamile in the Upper West Region are now ready and will soon become fully operational. These facilities are strategically positioned to strengthen security along Ghana’s northern frontier, which shares a border with Burkina Faso.

In addition to activating the bases, the Deputy Minister stated that surveillance along all major border corridors has been intensified. “The facilities are intended to strengthen security along Ghana’s northern frontier,” Mr. Genfi told the committee, adding that enhanced patrols will help detect and deter cross-border threats.

Defence Attachés Deployed to High-Risk Nations

In a move aimed at improving the safety of Ghanaians abroad, the government has approved the deployment of defence attachés to six countries deemed high-risk. These nations are Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Israel, Iran, and Libya.

According to Mr. Genfi, the attachés will be responsible for providing real-time intelligence support, strengthening diplomatic engagement, and most importantly, improving the safety and security of Ghanaian citizens living, working, or travelling in those regions.

Strengthening Regional Cooperation and Training

Despite the attack occurring on Burkinabe soil, Mr. Genfi reassured the committee that Ghana will continue to collaborate with authorities in Burkina Faso to combat shared security threats. He revealed that targeted joint training exercises are currently underway to improve escort duties and security protocols for cross-border travellers.

“The government is committed to closing any security gaps exposed by this unfortunate incident,” Mr. Genfi stated. He added that selected Ghanaian security personnel will undergo advanced academic and intelligence training at specialized centres, with a specific focus on escort operations and civilian protection.

The measures form part of a broader, long-term national strategy to fortify Ghana’s borders and ensure the protection of its citizens, both at home and abroad, as neighbouring countries in the Sahel continue to grapple with significant security challenges posed by terrorist groups.
