Bongo DCE Joseph Abaa Akaseke is dead

The Bongo District Assembly and the Upper East Region have been thrown into mourning following the death of Mr Joseph Abaa Akaseke, the District Chief Executive for Bongo.

Mr Akaseke passed away on Sunday evening, February 22, while on admission at the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital after a short illness. The exact cause of death has not been officially disclosed.

Alhaji Tahiru Aberinga, the Bongo Constituency Chairman of the National Democratic Congress, confirmed the passing to Graphic Online, sending shockwaves across the district and the wider region.

Residents, party members and colleagues have expressed deep sorrow over what many describe as a sudden and painful loss.

A committed public servant

The late DCE was widely regarded as a dedicated public servant who demonstrated strong passion for the development of Bongo and the welfare of its people.

During his tenure, Mr Akaseke championed improved basic services and advocated greater infrastructural support for the district. He worked closely with local authorities and national representatives to tackle key challenges in education, healthcare delivery and access to potable water.

Appointed in April 2025, he secured overwhelming backing from Assembly Members during his confirmation, polling 52 out of 54 valid votes—a result widely interpreted as a strong endorsement of his leadership and vision for the district.

In his confirmation address, he pledged to pursue inclusive and participatory governance to ensure that Bongo secured its fair share of national development resources.

Tributes pour in

Since news of his passing broke, tributes have continued to pour in on social media, with many recalling his dedication, energetic leadership and relentless efforts to improve livelihoods across the district.

Colleagues and constituents have described him as a unifying figure who worked tirelessly to bring development to one of the region’s most deserving districts.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family and the Bongo District Assembly in the coming days.
