The Ministry of Sports and Recreation has issued a strong rebuttal against claims made on a radio program regarding the allocation of 2026 World Cup tickets and visas, demanding a retraction and apology from the station involved.
In a statement signed by the Head of PR and Communications, Bagbara Tanko, the Ministry described as “entirely false, misleading, and malicious” allegations made during a broadcast on Radio XYZ.
According to the Ministry, the claim was made by Mr. Benjamin Gyawu, a communicator for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), during a show hosted by Mr. Agya Owusu. The statement alleges that Mr. Gyawu asserted that the sector Minister, Hon. Kofi Iddie Adams, had allocated 100 World Cup slots and corresponding visas to members of the NPP.
The Ministry categorically denied any such action. “The Ministry has not approved, authorized, or implemented any framework or plan involving government-sponsored fan participation for the 2026 World Cup, nor has any decision been made regarding the allocation of such slots or visas to any group,” the statement read.
Describing the information as “deeply regrettable,” the Ministry warned that such falsehoods have the potential to create “unwarranted disaffection within the sports sector and among the public.”
Consequently, the Ministry has issued a formal demand to the management of Radio XYZ. They are calling for a retraction of the statement and a formal apology to be issued within 12 hours of receiving the notice. The Ministry emphasized that the correction should be given “appropriate prominence in the same manner and reach as the original broadcast.”
While acknowledging the station’s contributions to sports development and nation-building, the Ministry underscored the importance of responsible journalism. “Verification of such critical information prior to dissemination is essential to prevent the spread of falsehoods,” the statement added.
The Ministry concluded by reaffirming its dedication to “transparency, integrity, and the promotion of fair and accurate communication in all matters concerning sports and national development.”
