An 18-year-old man is in police custody following a violent assault on a security officer at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, an incident authorities say stemmed from a dispute over visitor regulations.
Management of the hospital confirmed the attack occurred on the evening of Wednesday, February 18, 2026, at approximately 7:28 p.m. inside the facility’s Labour Ward.
According to a press release issued by the hospital on Friday, the suspect, identified as Gabriel Dimson, had accompanied his mother and a friend to the ward. The security officer on duty directed Dimson to move to the reception area, explaining that standing at the ward’s entrance outside of approved visiting hours was not permitted.
The situation escalated when Dimson allegedly refused to comply with the directive. Hospital management reports that the suspect then pushed the officer to the ground and proceeded to physically assault him. The attack left the officer unconscious.
Medical staff on duty in the Labour Ward immediately attended to the injured officer. He has since been admitted to the hospital and is reported to be in stable condition, responding well to treatment.
“The incident was reported to the Ghana Police Service at the Adabraka District Police Command,” the hospital’s statement read. “The suspect has been arrested, and the police are assisting with investigations and subsequent prosecution.”
In its public statement, the hospital administration condemned the attack in the strongest terms, emphasizing that such behavior will not be tolerated. Officials stressed that security personnel are essential to maintaining a safe environment for patients, visitors, and healthcare workers by enforcing necessary protocols.
“Management wishes to state unequivocally that we will not condone any form of violence against our staff,” the statement added. “Our security officers play a critical role in enforcing Hospital policies designed to protect patients, visitors, and healthcare workers.”
The hospital has taken the opportunity to appeal to the general public for cooperation, urging all visitors to adhere strictly to established guidelines, including visiting hours, to ensure the healthcare environment remains safe and orderly for everyone.
