President John Dramani Mahama on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, paid an emotional visit to Ghanaian survivors of the deadly Burkina Faso terrorist attack who are currently receiving treatment at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra.
The President, accompanied by Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, commiserated with the victims and delivered a firm assurance that the government would absorb all medical bills incurred by those injured in the horrific incident.
The survivors were among a group of Ghanaian tomato traders travelling on a truck that was ambushed by armed bandits in what authorities have described as a brutal and unprovoked attack. According to eyewitness accounts, the assailants reportedly singled out the men on board, lined them up, and massacred them before setting the vehicle ablaze.
President cuts short official engagement to visit victims
President Mahama had earlier been in Takoradi on official assignment but proceeded directly to the hospital immediately upon landing in Accra to engage the victims and obtain first-hand information on the incident, underscoring the gravity with which his administration views the tragedy.
The visit provided an opportunity for the President to personally assess the condition of the wounded and offer words of encouragement as they begin their recovery journey.
Seven Ghanaians killed, survivors evacuated
Seven Ghanaians lost their lives in the attack and have since been buried. The survivors were transported back to Ghana by the Ghana Armed Forces in a carefully coordinated evacuation operation.
Authorities have confirmed that all affected persons, including families of the deceased and the injured survivors, are undergoing counselling and receiving the necessary psychosocial support to help them process the trauma.
Medical officials at the 37 Military Hospital continue to provide comprehensive treatment to those who sustained injuries, with the government’s assurance of financial coverage removing any burden of medical expenses from the victims and their families.
The attack has reignited concerns about the safety of Ghanaian traders and travellers in the volatile Sahel region, where cross-border terrorist activities have escalated in recent months. The government is expected to engage with Burkina Faso authorities on strengthening security protocols for Ghanaian nationals travelling through the area.
