CETAG suspends nationwide strike after government releases funds.

The Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) has suspended its nationwide strike action after the government released funds to clear major outstanding allowances owed to its members.

As a result, CETAG has directed all tutors in the country’s Colleges of Education to resume academic work and return to the lecture halls with effect from Monday, February 16, 2026.

In a press statement dated February 16 and signed by National President Maxwell Bunu and National Secretary Fidelis Kamaayi, the Association announced that the strike, which commenced on November 24, 2025, had been called off with immediate effect.

CETAG said the decision followed the payment of the All-Year-Round Work Compensation for extra duties performed in 2022, arrears of the 2023/2024 Book and Research Allowance, as well as the 2022 Research Top-Up Allowance for staff of Akrokerri College of Education.

The Association described the government’s intervention as a significant step toward resolving the issues that led to the industrial action and commended authorities for honouring the outstanding financial commitments.

However, CETAG noted that two key matters remain unresolved and are currently before the National Labour Commission (NLC) for determination. These are the unpaid Book and Research Allowance arrears for the 2022/2023 academic year, which CETAG insists should be paid on a pro rata basis, and concerns over the alleged downgrading of experienced tutors with master’s degrees in the Colleges of Education.

The Association argued that the downgrading of such staff undermines professional dignity and violates agreed conditions of service as well as provisions of the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651).

While suspending the strike in good faith, CETAG appealed to the NLC to fast-track its processes to ensure a final and lasting resolution. It assured members that leadership remains committed to pursuing the outstanding issues to their logical conclusion.

CETAG declared the indefinite strike in November 2025, accusing the government of failing to implement an NLC arbitral award issued more than two years earlier. The action was sanctioned by the Association’s National Executive Committee following consultations with its National Council.
