Police bust major human trafficking and cyber fraud syndicate at Pokuase

A sophisticated syndicate involved in human trafficking and large-scale organised cyber fraud has been dismantled following a targeted intelligence-led operation by the Ghana Police Service.

The operation, conducted on Thursday by the Special Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team, with support from Combat Teams and the Surveillance Unit, led to the arrest of 22 suspects. The raid took place at a primary location in the Pokuase-Afiaman area, which authorities have identified as a major hub for cyber fraud, commonly referred to as a “Yahoo Boys” base.

According to a police situational report (SITREP), upon entering the facility, officers discovered the suspects actively engaged in fraudulent activities, manning computer systems designed to facilitate international internet fraud.

Preliminary investigations have revealed a well-structured hierarchy within the syndicate. Police indicate that the operation has uncovered elements of a sophisticated transnational criminal network, with evidence suggesting the involvement of human trafficking to sustain its operations. “Individuals [are] responsible for enforcing control and discipline over trafficked persons,” the police report stated, adding that there are strong indications that some of the younger suspects may themselves be victims of coercion and forced labour.

The Ghana Police Service has reiterated its firm commitment to combating organised crime and protecting vulnerable persons. Authorities have vowed to ensure that all individuals involved in human trafficking and cyber-related offences are brought to justice. Investigations are ongoing.
