A police patrol in Dzorwulu on Wednesday led to a high-speed chase and the arrest of two suspected armed robbers, ultimately uncovering a broader robbery network operating in the capital.
The Kotobabi District Police Command confirmed the arrest of Stephen Gletsu, 37, and Mohammed Sheriff, 20, following an intelligence-led operation on January 14.
According to an official police report, a patrol team on a service motorbike spotted the two men on an unregistered black Royal 125 motorbike. Both were dressed in all-black attire with black helmets, and the pillion rider was visibly wielding a cutlass.
Upon noticing the police, the suspects sped away, prompting a pursuit during which warning shots were fired. The chase ended near the Nigerian High Commission at Roman Ridge when the suspects lost control and crashed. Although they attempted to flee on foot, they were quickly traced and apprehended.
A search of the duo revealed a cache of suspected stolen items, including:
· Multiple mobile phones (iPhones, Samsung, Infinix, Nokia models)
· A necklace
· Cash totaling GH¢2,690 and US$2
The suspects sustained minor injuries during the arrest and were treated at the Police Hospital.
During interrogation, Gletsu and Sheriff admitted to the robbery and confessed to targeting numerous victims across Accra. Police have since obtained statements from several victims who identified the suspects and their stolen phones, recounting being threatened with a machete during the robberies.
The investigation has expanded, leading to the arrest of four additional accomplices linked to the network.
The accused have been remanded into police custody, appeared before court, and are scheduled to reappear on Wednesday, February 4.
The Accra Regional Police Command has reaffirmed its commitment to intensifying efforts against street robbery and other criminal activities within the metropolis.
