The National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, has dismissed calls for the removal of Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, describing him as a capable and effective leader who continues to serve the party well.
His comments follow claims that Afenyo-Markin failed to support the party’s flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, during the NPP presidential primary in the Effutu Constituency, with critics alleging that his actions contributed to another aspirant’s victory.
Speaking on Citi Eyewitness News on Monday, February 2, Mr Boakye said the Minority Leader has shown strong and formidable leadership in Parliament, adding that the party is satisfied with his performance.
He described Afenyo-Markin as an outstanding leader, particularly during challenging times, and stressed that it would be in the party’s best interest for him to continue in his role. Mr Boakye added that the party is pleased with how he organises parliamentary affairs and provides leadership, insisting that the criticisms are merely personal opinions.
At Saturday’s presidential primary, Kennedy Agyapong topped the polls in the Effutu Constituency with 644 votes, while Dr Bawumia secured 79 votes and Dr Bryan Acheampong polled 32 votes.
Despite this, Dr Bawumia emerged as the overall winner of the primary, securing 110,643 votes, representing 56.48 per cent, to become the party’s flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.
Kennedy Agyapong placed second with 46,554 votes (23.76 per cent), followed by Dr Bryan Acheampong with 36,303 votes (18.53 per cent). Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum and Kwabena Agyei Agyepong trailed with 1,999 votes (1.02 per cent) and 402 votes (0.21 per cent), respectively.
