Accra – The government has initiated the Greenville District Housing Programme, a new nationwide project designed to increase the supply of affordable housing for low- to middle-income earners.
Announced by the Minister of Works and Housing, Gilbert Kenneth Adjei, the programme forms a key part of the government’s decentralisation agenda and broader housing policy.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Wednesday, the Minister revealed that the initiative is currently in a pilot phase across eight selected districts: South Dayi, Asuogyaman, Akyemansa, Ajumako Enyan Essiam, Atwima Kwanwoma, Dormaa West, Bole, and Tamale.
Under the pilot, each of these districts will receive 20 two-bedroom housing units, with projects already at various stages of completion.
Minister Adjei highlighted that a hybrid construction method, utilising both compressed earth bricks and sandcrete blocks, will be employed. This approach aims to enhance sustainability, cost-efficiency, and the structural resilience of the homes.
“This programme represents an important step in improving living standards and advancing inclusivity across the country,” Mr. Adjei stated.
He further indicated that the official launch of the Greenville District Housing Programme is scheduled for the coming weeks, describing it as a major milestone in decentralising housing delivery and promoting social equity nationwide.
