Mahama amazed at swift economic recovery, credits divine intervention

President John Dramani Mahama has expressed astonishment at the rapid pace of Ghana’s economic recovery, saying the turnaround has happened far quicker than he anticipated when his administration assumed office amid a severe crisis.
Speaking to congregants at the First Sky Group’s Thanksgiving Service in the Northern Region on Sunday, President Mahama said the speed of the recovery has surprised both Ghanaians and international observers, earning praise from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank.
Having previously served as president, Mr Mahama said he believed it would take at least two years to see meaningful improvement given the depth of the inherited challenges. Instead, he noted, significant progress has emerged much sooner.
He highlighted sharp declines in inflation — from 23.8 per cent to 5.4 per cent within a year — and a 37 per cent appreciation of the Ghana cedi over the same period as clear evidence of the rebound.
President Mahama attributed the achievements to prudent economic management, fiscal discipline, and divine grace.
“I have done this job before, and the crisis we faced was extremely difficult. In my own estimation, I thought it would take about two years to see an economic turnaround. But this is how far God has brought us,” he told the gathering.
“We are all surprised and shocked at the speed of the recovery. Whenever I meet IMF and World Bank officials, they are amazed at what has happened in Ghana. Today, Ghana has become something of a poster child for the IMF and the World Bank,” he added, stressing that the dramatic drop in inflation and the cedi’s strong performance “can only be attributed to the grace of God.”
The President’s remarks underscore the administration’s narrative of steady macroeconomic stabilisation since taking office.
