The Tema Regional Police Command has arrested two persons and seized 692 parcels of suspected Indian hemp during a snap-check operation at Dawhenya in the Prampram Division, marking the latest in a series of successful anti-narcotics operations in the region .
Dawn Interception
The operation was conducted in the early hours of Tuesday, September 8, 2026, at approximately 12:45 a.m., when police officers intercepted an Accra-bound Ford Transit vehicle with registration number GT 6140-22 .
The vehicle was being driven by Godwin Asigeh, with Freeman Amedoku serving as his assistant. A search of the vehicle uncovered 692 parcels of suspected Indian hemp, which had been wrapped in yellow polythene bags .
Police later counted the suspected narcotic exhibits in the presence of the suspects and recorded the total of 692 pieces. Statements were taken from the officers who undertook the arrest, while the two suspects also provided caution statements .
Suspects in Custody
The two suspects, the vehicle, and the suspected narcotic substance were subsequently conveyed to the Devtraco Police Station for further action . According to the Police Command, the suspected substance has been retained as an exhibit, while the vehicle has been impounded .
The suspects remain in police custody and are expected to face further action in accordance with the law. The case is being investigated for suspected possession of narcotic substances contrary to Section 37 of the Narcotics Control Commission Act, 2020 (Act 1019) .
Intensified Anti-Drug Operations
The Tema Regional Police Command has commended the officers who carried out the operation and assured the public that it will intensify efforts to prevent the trafficking and distribution of narcotic substances within the region .
The seizure follows a string of major narcotics interdictions by the Tema Regional Police Command in recent months. In July 2026, officers reportedly rejected a GH¢150,000 bribe allegedly offered by a suspect seeking to secure the release of a truck carrying 5,039 compressed parcels of suspected narcotic substances intercepted at Afienya .
In August 2026, the Command intercepted 866 parcels of a white powdered substance suspected to be cocaine at the Tema Port, concealed in sacks of gari and allegedly destined for export, with an estimated street value of $6.928 million. Four suspects, including a Dutch national and three Ghanaians, were arrested in connection with the operation .
Regional Efforts Against Drug Trafficking
The Dawhenya operation is part of broader efforts by police commands across the country to combat drug trafficking. The Northern Regional Police Command recently arrested 217 suspects in a special operation code-named “Red Maria” within the past month, with 40 persons convicted by the courts .
The Ghana Police Service has reaffirmed its determination to combat drug trafficking and maintain professionalism and integrity in law enforcement operations across the region . The Tema Regional Police Command has been particularly active under the leadership of Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Eric Asamoah Asiedu, who has overseen several major drug interdictions .
