Five-Time Olympian Felipe Perrone pushes for Water Polo growth in Ghana

Retired water polo legend Felipe Perrone, a five-time Olympian, has met with top officials from the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) and the Ghana Swimming Association (GSA) to explore ways to develop and promote water polo in the country.
The Brazilian-born Spanish star paid a courtesy call on GOC President Richard Akpokavie on Monday, January 19, at the Olympic House in Ridge, Accra.
During the meeting, Mr. Akpokavie welcomed Perrone’s initiative and pledged the GOC’s full support for collaborative efforts to help the GSA build the sport nationwide. Discussions centred on the importance of stronger institutional support for the GSA as it seeks to expand water polo across Ghana.
Perrone, who is currently serving as a representative of World Aquatics, is actively working to advance the sport throughout the region. His visit to Ghana aligned with a Water Polo Coaches Course organised by Blackstar Polo, with backing from the GSA and World Aquatics.
The 39-year-old retired in July 2025 after a distinguished career spanning more than two decades. He represented Spain in five Olympic Games from 2008 to 2024 and captained the national team to gold medals at the 2025 World Championships, the 2024 European Championships, and the 2022 World Championships.
The engagement signals growing international interest in elevating water polo in Ghana, a sport that remains in its developmental stages locally.
