Ghana partners Google to deploy AI education tools in Twi, Ewe, Dagbani

Ghana is set to expand access to education through the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools developed in local languages, the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced.

In a Facebook post on Friday, January 23, 2026, the minister said he recently held discussions with the Vice President of Google at the ongoing Generative AI Summit in the United Kingdom, focusing on strategies to improve learning outcomes in Ghana and across Africa.

“Yesterday, I had a fruitful engagement with the Vice President of Google, where ideas were shared to improve quality education in Ghana and Africa as a whole,” Mr Iddrisu stated.

The initiative forms part of Google’s $37 million investment in Africa and includes the development of speech recognition and AI-powered tools in Ghanaian languages such as Twi, Ewe and Dagbani. The tools will also be designed to recognise non-standard speech patterns to make digital learning more accessible to a wider range of users.

The Education Minister further emphasised the need to include Hausa, a widely spoken language in Ghana and across West Africa, to enhance regional inclusivity.

According to him, the deployment of AI tools in local languages will help ensure that learners in rural communities, as well as persons with disabilities, can effectively access educational resources.

Mr Iddrisu also disclosed that Google has assured the Ministry of Education that its education tools will be deployed in Ghana on a zero-rated basis.

The package will include curriculum-aligned learning materials and resources on the responsible use of AI in teaching and learning, ensuring that students can access content regardless of income or location.

As part of the partnership, Google will collaborate with the University of Ghana and GDI Hub to advance AI research in local languages, positioning Ghana as a leader in inclusive digital education on the African continent.

“Ghana is not just participating in the AI revolution; we are helping to shape it for Africa,” the minister added.
