Legendary Ghanaian gospel musician Yaw Sarpong has passed away at Emena Hospital in Kumasi, where he was receiving medical treatment.
A pioneer of Ghanaian gospel music, Sarpong led the Asomafo Gospel Band to create timeless classics that earned him deep respect across the Christian community and the broader music industry. Generations of younger gospel artistes have cited him as a profound influence.
His passing comes just weeks after the death of Maame Tiwaa, a prominent member of the Asomafo group, compounding grief within Ghana’s gospel music community.
In 2025, Sarpong was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards in recognition of his enduring contributions to gospel music.
Tributes are expected to continue pouring in as the nation mourns the loss of one of its gospel icons. Funeral arrangements will be announced by the family in due course.
