Interior Ministry considers extending gun amnesty period

The Ministry of the Interior says it is considering extending the duration of the ongoing gun amnesty programme to give more people the opportunity to voluntarily surrender illicit firearms.

The programme, which began on December 1, 2025, and is expected to end on January 15, 2026, offers immunity from prosecution to individuals who hand in illegal weapons, with the aim of curbing the spread of firearms and improving community safety nationwide.

Speaking at a gun amnesty stakeholder engagement involving the Ghana Airports Company and airport security agencies at Kotoka International Airport on Monday, January 12, Deputy Minister for the Interior, Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi, said the ministry is responding to appeals from the public and key stakeholders for more time.

He assured participants that the Minister for the Interior is carefully considering the requests, noting that the move would reflect government’s awareness of conditions on the ground and ensure that no one is prevented from complying with the law due to time constraints.

At the same meeting, the Executive Secretary of the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons, Adam Bona, cautioned airport officials against aiding the illegal importation or exportation of firearms. He warned that anyone found colluding in the unlawful movement of weapons would face the full consequences of the law, stressing that firearm regulations would be strictly enforced.
