The Office of the Attorney-General and Ministry of Justice has revealed that it did not receive any case docket from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on the investigation into Akonta Mining Company Limited until September 2025—almost three years after the probe was initiated.
The disclosure was made in response to a Right to Information (RTI) request submitted by private legal practitioner Jonathan Owusu Asare.
In a statement signed by the Ministry’s Information Officer, Lydia Attoh, the Attorney-General’s office detailed the timeline of engagements between the CID and the Ministry concerning the case.
The Ministry explained that the CID began investigating Akonta Mining in October 2022, following petitions from Ing. Ken Ashigbey and lawyer Martin Kpebu over alleged illegal mining activities in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve.
However, the Attorney-General’s office said it could not establish when the CID concluded its investigations. It noted that the case docket was only submitted to the Ministry “on or about September 15, 2025.”
The response further stressed that no docket relating to Akonta Mining was received by the Ministry between 2022 and 2024, even though investigations were ongoing during that period.
“This office did not receive a docket in respect of Akonta Mining within the stipulated time frame,” the statement added.
