The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has stepped up calls for accountability following the assault on Class FM journalist Samuel Addo during a fire outbreak at the Kasoa Market on Sunday, January 4, 2026.
Addressing a press briefing on Tuesday, GJA President Albert Kwabena Dwumfour called for the immediate removal of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) Public Relations Officer, DO II Desmond Ackah, describing his handling of the matter as clear evidence that he is unfit to oversee communications for the Service.
“We call for the immediate dismissal or removal of the PRO of the GNFS from the position because our interactions with him on the case show that he is unfit to be in charge of communication for the Fire Service,” he said.
The Association further demanded an unqualified public apology from the GNFS to Mr Addo, the Class Media Group, and the broader media fraternity for the humiliation, trauma, and obstruction of professional duties resulting from the assault.
Mr Dwumfour commended the government, through the Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, for publicly condemning the attack. In a post on X, Mr Kwakye Ofosu denounced the conduct of the fire personnel involved and assured the public that decisive action would be taken.
The GJA also praised the management and Chief Executive Officer of the Class Media Group, Seidu Agongo, for issuing a strong statement in condemnation of the incident.
Mr Dwumfour confirmed that the Association would work closely with the Class Media Group and the Minister of State in charge of Government Communications to ensure justice for Mr Addo.
He warned that any attempt to shield those responsible or downplay the incident would be strongly opposed, stressing that the protection of journalists and the defence of press freedom remain non-negotiable.
