President Donald Trump spent Saturday flooding Truth Social with a series of attention-grabbing posts, but it was a side-by-side comparison of himself and former President Barack Obama in their younger years that truly set the internet alight.
The 80-year-old president first posted what appeared to be an AI-generated image depicting himself as the Greek Titan Atlas, literally holding the world on his shoulders while draped in an American flag. But it was a subsequent post that drew the most scrutiny — a split image showing Trump at age 20 in a New York Military Academy uniform alongside Obama at 18, pictured with a cigarette in his mouth.
A picture speaks a thousand words
Trump offered no caption alongside the image — a notable departure from his usual social media style. The contrast, however, was unmistakable. On one side, a disciplined teenager in military dress. On the other, a young man in a relaxed pose with a cigarette at Occidental College, wearing a wide-brimmed hat and a collared shirt.
The message appeared clear: Trump was positioning himself as strait-laced and put-together, while portraying his predecessor as someone “screwing around” in his youth. Obama has spoken publicly on multiple occasions about his struggle with smoking, which began during his teenage years and followed him into adulthood.
However, the comparison quickly backfired.
‘Aura mogging’ and military service questions
Social media users were swift to mock the post. One X user joked that Obama was “aura mogging” Trump in the comparison — a slang term suggesting someone appears more confident and dominant. Another commented: “We all know who the better hang is”.
Critics also pointed out that Trump’s photo showed him in a military uniform despite his never having served in the armed forces. The president received five draft deferments during the Vietnam War — four for education and a fifth on medical grounds. He attended New York Military Academy, a boarding school about an hour north of New York City, which his father reportedly sent him to after concerns over his behaviour.
“His parents sent him to a military boarding school for behavioural issues and bullying,” one user wrote on X. “Now he uses the photo to pretend he was in the military.”
Trump’s former roommate at the academy, Art Davie, previously told the Daily Beast: “He was an egomaniac when he was 16. He was a great flag waver for himself. He wanted everyone to recognise he was the GOAT in everything he did out there.”
It also remains unclear why Trump labelled himself as 20 years old in the photo, given that he graduated from the academy in 1964 at age 17.
A response to Obama’s ‘obsession’ claim
The throwback post came just days after Obama appeared on the “All the Smoke” podcast with former NBA player Matt Barnes, where he suggested that Trump has an “obsession” with him.
“I obviously have a room in his head. A suite in his head,” Obama said.
The former president added that Trump tends not to confront him directly, suggesting that Trump understands a face-to-face exchange would not go his way.
Trump’s post appeared to be a direct response — a visual rebuttal to Obama’s claim that he lives “rent free” in the current president’s mind.
A familiar pattern
The back-and-forth between the two men has continued well past both of their times in the White House, playing out largely through media appearances, social media posts, and public comments. Trump has made Obama a recurring reference point throughout his political life, and the pattern has not changed in his second term.
It is not the first time Trump has posted an image seemingly comparing himself to a god-like or mythological figure. Earlier this year, he posted an AI-generated image depicting himself as Jesus healing a sick man — a post that enraged even some Republicans.
The verdict online
The split photo post has drawn significant engagement since it went up, with viewers reading the two images through their own political lenses. For Trump’s supporters, the contrast reinforces a preferred narrative about discipline and character. For Obama’s, the image of a young man with a cigarette at a California college is far less damning than the caption-free framing suggests.
One X user compared images of the two presidents not in their early adulthood but in middle age, showing Obama at 46 during his 2008 presidential campaign alongside Trump at 46 with his former friend, convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
As one commenter put it: “Obama Derangement Syndrome.”
What both sides appear to agree on is that neither man seems close to letting this particular rivalry fade into irrelevance.
