Belgium’s Doku under fire over plan to leave World Cup for birth of first child

Belgium winger Jeremy Doku has sparked controversy after stating he would leave the World Cup squad to attend the birth of his first child – even if that falls during the quarter-finals.

The Manchester City star revealed that his wife, Shireen, is due in the second week of July, which coincides with the latter stages of the tournament in the United States. Speaking to Reuters, Doku made clear where his priorities lie.

“It’s my first child, I definitely want to be there,” he said. “Nobody wants to miss the birth of their first baby. But I also know that football involves many other considerations. I know the federation supports players and understands their situation, and we’ll see what can be done.”

His comments drew sharp criticism from France Pierron, a host on French broadcaster L’Équipe’s channel, who described a father’s presence during childbirth as “completely useless”.

“The World Cup is an incredible joy – hundreds of footballers would give anything to be in your shoes, and it might be a once‑in‑a‑lifetime opportunity,” Pierron said. “To leave all that for a birth – forgive my language, but it’s a disgusting moment, because the father is superfluous there.”

The remarks triggered immediate public backlash, with former Olympic boxing champion Brahim Asloum hitting back: “A child is for life. The World Cup ends, and that’s it.” Facing mounting criticism, Pierron later apologised on social media, saying her words “may have shocked, hurt or offended some people” and that she “never intended to belittle the role of fathers alongside their partners and children”.

Doku’s preparations have been further complicated by a chest infection, which the Belgian FA confirmed will keep him out of their second group game against Iran. The 24‑year‑old started and played 86 minutes in Belgium’s opening 1‑1 draw with Egypt.

The debate has reignited discussions about the balance between professional duty and family values. There are precedents: Phil Foden left England’s Euro 2024 camp for the birth of his third child, and Fabian Delph temporarily departed the 2018 World Cup squad for a similar reason.

Belgium are in Group G alongside Egypt, Iran and New Zealand. The quarter‑finals are scheduled for 9–11 July. According to Belgian media, contingency plans are being explored – including the possibility of a private jet to allow Doku to return home swiftly if needed.
