Tiny Curaçao makes World Cup history

Curaçao, the smallest nation by both area and population ever to reach a men’s World Cup, held Ecuador to a breathtaking 0-0 draw in Kansas City. In doing so, The Blue Wave secured their first-ever World Cup point — and they owe it all to one man.

Eloy Room. Fifteen saves. One night of magic.

The 37-year-old Miami FC goalkeeper produced a performance for the ages, equaling the World Cup record for most saves in a single match since records began in 1966. Only Tim Howard has matched that number — but Room kept a clean sheet. Howard didn’t.

Ecuador threw everything at him. Nearly 30 attempts. Three shots off the woodwork. A one-on-one with Enner Valencia inside three minutes. Room stopped them all. He made six saves in the first half alone, diving, clawing, parrying — a one-man fortress.

“It just became a shopping list of saves,” said BBC pundit Martin Keown. “Take a bow, Room. Absolutely magnificent.”

How they got here

Curaçao qualified on their fourth attempt, finishing top of their CONCACAF group with an undefeated 3-3-0 record. They scored more goals than any other CONCACAF nation in qualifying (28) and never lost a single match.

Led by 78-year-old Dutch manager Dick Advocaat — now the oldest head coach in World Cup history — the squad is a remarkable story in itself. All but one of the 26 players were born in the Netherlands, tracing their roots back to the Caribbean island through parents and grandparents. Eighteen represented the Netherlands at youth level. Only Tahith Chong, the former Manchester United academy product, was actually born on the island.

A brutal group

Drawn alongside Germany, Ecuador and Côte d’Ivoire, Curaçao faced the reigning European giants in their opener. Livano Comenencia scored their first-ever World Cup goal in the 21st minute — but Germany ran riot, winning 7-1.

Most teams would have crumbled.

Instead, Curaçao bounced back. Against Ecuador, they defended with their lives. Room made save after save. The backline held firm. And when the final whistle blew, history was theirs.

What it means

Curaçao became just the 74th team ever to earn a World Cup point. They are the first CONCACAF debutants since Panama in 2018. And now, with one group match remaining against Côte d’Ivoire, they still have a shot at reaching the knockout rounds.

Back home, 156,000 people are celebrating.

“We’re going to party all week in Curaçao,” one fan told NBC Sports. “No sleep. The whole week. We got a point. The smallest nation in the World Cup. Curaçao!”

From a 7-1 thrashing to a historic point. From 150,000 souls to the world stage. From complete unknowns to global inspiration.

What a beautiful, historic achievement. Take a bow, Curaçao. 🫡
