Carthage Eagles hit rock bottom as Tunisia crash out of World Cup in humiliating fashion

Tunisia’s 2026 World Cup campaign has descended into historic disaster after the Carthage Eagles suffered a second consecutive thrashing, falling 4-0 to Japan in their Group F clash on Saturday to confirm their elimination from the tournament.

The North Africans arrived in Monterrey already in crisis. Just days earlier, they had been demolished 5-1 by Sweden in their opening fixture, a result that cost head coach Sabri Lamouchi his job. Lamouchi, who had only been appointed in January 2026, was sacked after just one game at the tournament — making him the first manager in World Cup history to be dismissed after a single match.

In a desperate bid to salvage their campaign, the Tunisian Football Federation turned to two-time Africa Cup of Nations winner Hervé Renard, appointing the Frenchman until the end of the tournament. Renard, who had previously led Morocco at the 2018 World Cup and guided Saudi Arabia to a shock victory over Argentina in 2022, was seen as a potential saviour.

But the managerial change proved fruitless. Japan, playing in the 1,000th match in FIFA World Cup history, tore Tunisia apart from the opening whistle. Daichi Kamada opened the scoring in the fourth minute, Ayase Ueda added a second in the 31st minute, Junya Ito struck in the 69th minute, and Ueda completed his brace with a looping header in the 84th minute.

The statistics paint a picture of utter devastation. Tunisia have conceded nine goals across their two matches while scoring just once. They are rooted to the bottom of Group F with zero points and cannot avoid finishing last even if they beat the Netherlands in their final fixture.

A Place in the History Books — for All the Wrong Reasons

The scale of Tunisia’s humiliation extends beyond mere results. The Carthage Eagles have become the first team since Greece in 1994 to lose both of their opening World Cup matches by a margin of four or more goals — Greece having fallen 4-0 to Argentina and 4-0 to Bulgaria in that tournament.

Renard’s debut could hardly have been more damaging. He is the first Tunisia manager to suffer a four-goal defeat on his international bow since Milan Kristic’s 5-1 loss to Yugoslavia on January 3, 1960.

For a nation that has qualified for seven World Cups but never progressed beyond the group stage, this represents absolute rock bottom. The Carthage Eagles have become the first African side to be eliminated from the 2026 tournament.

“Tunisia’s disappointing campaign came to an end after a 4-0 defeat to Japan confirmed their elimination,” Newswatch reported. “The North Africans arrived at the match under new coach Herve Renard following the dismissal of Sabri Lamouchi after a heavy loss to Sweden, but the managerial change failed to spark an improvement as Japan dominated from start to finish.”

Japan, by contrast, now sit joint-top of Group F with four points alongside the Netherlands and are well-placed to reach the round of 32. For Tunisia, only a dead rubber against the group leaders remains — a final, painful reminder of a campaign that promised so little and delivered even less.
