16 killed in horrific collision between bus and ambulance on Kumasi-Sunyani highway

Sixteen people have been confirmed dead following a head-on collision between a Ford Transit bus and an ambulance at Potrikrom on the Kumasi–Sunyani highway in the Ashanti Region.

The tragic incident occurred near Mankranso in the Ahafo Ano South East District on Tuesday, involving a Ford Transit bus with registration number GT 6576-19 travelling from Kumasi towards Drobo and an ambulance reportedly conveying a pregnant woman from Drobo to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi.

According to eyewitnesses, the two vehicles collided at Potrikrom with tremendous force, resulting in the instantaneous death of all 16 passengers aboard the Ford Transit bus.

The condition of the pregnant woman and other occupants of the ambulance remains unknown at this time, with rescue workers still assessing the scene.

The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the Mankranso Hospital mortuary, where they await identification and autopsy procedures.

Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, who expressed profound shock at the news, extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families.

“May their souls rest in perfect peace,” Dr Amoakohene said in a brief statement after receiving news of the accident.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash, as the nation mourns one of the deadliest road accidents in recent months on the Kumasi-Sunyani corridor.

The accident has reignited concerns about road safety on Ghana’s highways, particularly regarding commercial passenger vehicles and emergency response protocols.
